Pakistan to warm up for Sri Lanka series from FridayJanuary 15th, 2009 - 8:43 pm ICT by IANS
Karachi, Jan 15 (IANS) Pakistani cricketers will assemble here Friday for a brief training camp ahead of a hurriedly-arranged one-day series against Sri Lanka starting Tuesday.Fifteen players selected for the three-match assignment and a few reserves will warm up under the supervision of coach Intikhab Alam ahead of the series opener at the National Stadium here under lights. The second ODI will be played next Wednesday while the final will be held Jan 24 in Lahore.
Intikhab, a former Pakistan captain, told IANS Thursday that the idea of having a camp was to get the players together for a few days before the start of the much-awaited series.
“The boys are already in shape because almost all of them are playing domestic matches but we wanted them to spend some time together in the nets before the series,” he said.
Intikhab said that the team management and Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik have prepared a strategy for Sri Lanka, adding that his boys have the ability to tackle the touring spin twins - Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis.
The Murali-Mendis partnership is regarded as the best spin team in the world and Intikhab, in an earlier interview, has said he was wary of the two strike bowlers.
Pakistan has lined up the series against Sri Lanka to fill in for the cancelled home series against India that was scheduled for January-February.
India refused to tour Pakistan because of strained relations between the two governments over last year’s terror attacks in Mumbai. After playing the one-dayers Sri Lanka return home to host India in a one-day series Jan 28-Feb 14 and will come back to Pakistan for the Test series.
