Pak openers unsure about batting tactics, says Afridi

Pallekele (Sri Lanka), Mar 14(ANI): Pakistan’s opening batsmen are struggling in the ongoing World Cup because they are not sure whether to play their positive game or just try to survive early overs, captain Shahid Afridi has said.

“At the moment, openers are thinking let’s play 15 overs, but don’t lose wickets and another way they are thinking is to play their positive game,” The Nation quoted Afridi, as saying.

Openers Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad have scored just 93 runs between them in Pakistan’s four World Cup matches played against Kenya, Sri Lanka, Canada and England.

Their dismal starts have put the middle-order under pressure, and Pakistan failed to cross the 200-run mark in its last two matches.

“It’s a very good combination (of openers) but the boys are not performing,” Afridi said, adding, “We are trying to give them confidence to perform.”

Pakistan need a forceful showing against Zimbabwe on Monday (today) to regain their confidence ahead of their last Pool A game against Australia in Colombo on March 19. (ANI)
