Pak batsman gifted Hauritz five-wicket hauls in Melbourne, Sydney: Alam
January 12th, 2010 - 1:34 pm ICT by ANIHobart, Jan 12(ANI): Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam reckons that Australian off-spinner Nathan Hauritz did not earn his five-wicket hauls in back-to-back Tests in Melbourne and Sydney, instead his batsmen were responsible for their own demise.
Hauritz had figures of 5-101 and 5-53 amid a flurry of strokes by the tourists, as evidenced by his economy rates of 4.2 and 4.41 for the two innings.
“Hauritz has done well, but I feel that we have given him wickets. I can see if someone has bowled a really good ball and got somebody out, but we have been giving wickets by trying to get after him,” The Dawn quoted Alam, as saying.
“I’m not taking anything away from Hauritz, I think he is an intelligent bowler and he bowled well, you have to give him credit for that. But I personally feel we have given him wickets rather than he has taken wickets,” he added.
Hauritz appeared to have gained credibility as a match-winning spinner with his two most recent outings, but apparently not in the minds of the Pakistanis.
Remarkably, he has done better than legend Shane Warne at the same stage of their careers, as after 12 Tests, Hauritz had 47 wickets at 30.32 while Warne had 39 at 28.
Legendary England off-spinner Jim Laker (50 wickets at 28) had only three more wickets than Hauritz over the same period while other top-flight England tweakers, Derek Underwood (39 wickets at 21) and Fred Titmus (38 at 26), had better averages than Hauritz, but far fewer wickets from their first 12 Tests.
