Oz Open winners set earn 2.2 million dollars each in 2011

Melbourne, Oct. 5 (ANI): Australian Open men’s and women’s tennis champions will each take home a whopping 2.2 million dollars in January 2011.The respective singles runners-up will each get a hefty consolation prize of 1.1 million dollars each. This, by far, is the Open’s biggest purse in its 105-year history.

The record winners’ cheques are from the 25 million dollar prize money on offer to the world’s best tennis players at the redeveloped Melbourne Park.

Past champions Ken Rosewall and Evonne Cawley today showcased the singles trophies that will be taken around Australia, similar to the Melbourne Cup’s tour, in the lead-up to the 2011 championships.

Each singles winner will get a full-size replica of trhe Norman Brookes Challenge cup (men) and Daphne Akhurst Memorial cup (women) during the centre court presentations that follow the finals. (ANI)
