Oz champion cyclist says heavy security for Delhi CWG has left her fearless
September 30th, 2010 - 2:30 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Sep 30(ANI): Australian Olympic gold medal cyclist Anna Meares insists that she is comforted by the security presence in New Delhi for the Commonwealth Games.
Meares said that she was anxious about security threats before arriving in the Indian capital for the October 3-14 Games, but having experienced the stiff security at close quarters, she had little fears left.
“The anxiety level was before we got here. When we get on to a bus and see all the military guys with armoured guns, I’ve never been that close to guns before … it’s something that made us feel a lot more comfortable on the journey from the airport to the village,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Meares, as saying.
“It’s just part and parcel of the world we live in at the moment,” she added.
She further lamented the attitude of several champion British cyclists who have withdrawn from the mega event.
“We want to win and win against the best in the world and currently those guys are the best in the world. I can’t speak for the Brits and the attitude they have taken to these Commonwealth Games, but they are important to me, important to the Australian people and that’s why I am here,” Meares said.
“I think you have to take them for what they are, and that is the spirit of great competition, friendliness and bringing nations together - I like being a part of this,” she added. (ANI)
