Oz athletes at Delhi CWG in ‘top tier’ of targets for terrorists: Experts

Sydney, Sep 25(ANI): Australian athletes at the Delhi Commonwealth Games present a top-tier target for a range of terrorist groups, security experts have said.
According to The Australian, groups including the Indian Mujahadeen, pro-Taliban militants and ultra-right wing Hindu nationalists are among those security experts fear might attempt a terrorist strike.
Carl Ungerer, a security expert at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, said that the Commonwealth Games being a major international sporting event makes it a very attractive target for terrorists.
“Australia, a close ally of the US, and a contributor to the war effort in Afghanistan, ranks in the top tier of nations who could be targeted,” Ungerer warned.
However, Neil Fergus, chief executive of Intelligent Risks, who has advised the Commonwealth Games Federation on security, said that he was “reasonably pleased” with the Delhi police’s arrangements.
Fergus stressed that the focus has been on securing the athletes’ village.
“Security consultants would then lock down and assess each sporting stadium individually on a rolling basis over the next week. Nobody is taking this lightly, including the Indians,” Fergus said. (ANI)
