Orange County, TX high school star quarterback dies shortly after throwing touchdown
September 18th, 2010 - 7:41 pm ICT by BNO NewsWEST ORANGE, TEXAS (BNO NEWS) – Orange County officials on Saturday confirmed the death of the West Orange Stark (WO-S) High School quarterback who collapsed on Friday shortly after making a touchdown pass at a school football game, KBMT reported.
Reggie Garrett, a senior at WO-S High School was pronounced dead at Baptist Hospital Orange just after 9:30 p.m. The quarterback made his way to the sidelines just after he made a touchdown pass with nine minutes left in the second quarter, and passed out on the sidelines where paramedics say he likely had a seizure.
He was transported to the hospital where he became non-responsive to treatment. His death is currently under investigation, and an autopsy has been ordered to confirm the cause of death. However, it’s assumed it has something to do with his history of seizures, which his coach said he knew vaguely about but didn’t understand the severity of his condition.
Emotions were running high during a post-game meet when coaches, players, parents, administrators, and teachers all gathered at the 50 yard line. Coaches said that there are things, especially in situations like these, which are more important than football.
WO-S players were on their knees crying and comforting each other, alongside their parents. The team got the news of the death of Garrett during the fourth quarter. The game concluded with a win with a score of 27-6 for WO-S against Jasper.
Fans then poured into the hospitals lobby, with high emotions after learning of Garrett’s death. Garrett was the starting quarterback for the WO-S Mustangs, and had thrown his second touchdown that night, giving his team a solid lead of 21-0. WO-S has won a number of regional and state championships for its athletic activities at the school.
“You see how those kids reacted,” WO-S coach Dan Hooks said. “He’s just super. A good student. It will be hard for them. It will take a long time for them to get over that. Me too.”
