Open Championship’s widened fairways to help Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods London, Apr 20(ANI): The chances of struggling American golfer Tiger Woods losing a ball with his first shot in this year’s Open Championship at Sandwich, England, have been severely reduced.

Royal St George’s is the course where Woods famously lost a ball with his first shot of the championship in 2003 and ran up a triple bogey seven.

That effectively cost him the title, as he finished just two shots behind 500-1 winner Ben Curtis in joint fourth.

With less than 30 per cent of all drives finishing on the fairway in 2003, the landing area has been widened by about 12 yards.

However, Royal and Ancient Club chief executive Peter Dawson insists that the changes have not been done to help Woods

“Tiger’s lost ball was not an influence - it was the overall statistic of 27-28 percent,” the Sun quoted Dawson, as saying.

Royal St George’s will play 100 yards longer than it did eight years ago with the par cut from 71 to 70 when The Open is staged there from July 14-17. (ANI)
