Olympics: Weber, Dietze steer Germany to kayak double gold
August 9th, 2012 - 6:42 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Aug 9 (IANS/RIA Novosti) German pair Franziska Weber and Tina Dietze took Olympic gold in the women’s kayak double here Thursday, depriving their Hungarian rivals of a third-consecutive title.
Weber and Dietze handed their country its second successive gold on water by winning in 1:42.213 seconds.
Hungarian defending champions Katalin Kovacs and Natasa Douchev-Janics couldn’t cope with the pace and had to settle for silver a second behind.
Polish team Karolina Naja and Beata Mikolajczyk took the bronze in 1:44.00, fending off a late challenge from China.
Germany’s Peter Kretschmer and Kurt Kuschela won the men’s canoe double 1000 metres earlier in the day.
