Isinbaeva was looking to become the first woman to win a track and field gold in an individual event three times straight.
The two-time Olympic champion failed to clear 4.75 metres twice, then missed 4.80, to leave America’s Jenn Suhr and Cuba’s Yarisley Silva to fight it out for the gold.
