40171_m15Feb 13, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The beginning of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games was by no means a smooth one. The tragic demise of a young Georgian athlete marred the festive spirit to an extent. Then there was another fiasco that left the authorities somewhat baffled and embarrassed. The Olympic torch suffered a malfunction at the ceremony. As per the plans, 4 pillars were to arise from the ground of B.C. Place stadium and each of them carrying a flame for lighting up the cauldron. However, things did not go as planned. Wayne Gretzky, Nancy Greene and Le May Doan were left standing and holding their torches as one of the pillars did not work as expected.

The organizing committee of the winter Olympic admitted something had gone wrong with the hydraulic setup of the cauldron. Catriona Le May Doan seemed perplexed and stood at the place. She could not guess what had happened. Others proceeded to touch the torches that they held to the cauldron’s base. Catriona Le May Doan finally regained her composure and saluted the viewers. The other trio had lit the flame by that time. However, some people skipped the torch malfunction incident altogether and they came to know about it later.

However, those who noticed the malfunction were not much affected by it. The ceremony was a star studded one and everyone was busy watching the performances. Besides, the remaining three pillars of the cauldron worked well and the flame was lit in the end. The glitch was not serious enough to take away the festive spirit.
