Olympic equestrian: Britain gallops to gold
August 7th, 2012 - 12:02 am ICT by IANSLondon, Aug 6 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Britain bagged its first Olympic showjumping gold in 60 years Monday, winning a thrilling jump-off against the Netherlands here.
Riders Ben Maher, Scott Brash, Nick Skelton and Peter Charles had tied with the Dutch on eight points.
The Netherlands, widely considered to be the top jumping nation in the world, took the silver, with overnight leader Saudi Arabia taking bronze.
Britain’s last showjumping gold came at the Helsinki Games of 1952.
The gold will be of particular significance for Skelton, who injured his neck in a fall in September 2000.
