Farah took the lead at the bell and held it in a courageous, lung-busting final 100 meters to take gold in 13 minutes, 41.66 seconds.
Ethiopia’s world bronze medalist Dejen Gebremeskel came strong at the death but had to settle for silver in 13:41.98.
Thomas Pkemei Longosiwa of Kenya won a surprise bronze in 13:42.36.
It makes a long-distance double for Farah, who became the first Briton to win the Olympic 10000 metres a week ago.
