NY Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards arrested for drunken driving
September 21st, 2010 - 11:30 pm ICT by BNO NewsNEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards on Tuesday morning was arrested for drunken driving after he was found with twice the legal limit of blood-alcohol content in his system, local media reported.
Edwards, 27, was stopped for having overly-tinted windows in his Range Rover. Police officers noticed strong alcohol odor from Edwards and used a breathalyzer to determine the blood-alcohol content of the Jets player.
The former Cleveland Browns wide receiver blew a 0.16 on the breathalyzer, the double of the state’s legal limit of 0.08. Edwards was accompanied by four individuals who were not charged.
“We are very disappointed in Braylon’s actions this morning. The Player Protect program is in place for our organization to prevent this situation. Braylon is aware of this program and showed poor judgment,” Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said.
The Jets acquired the wide receiver from the Browns in 2005, days after he was accused of punching a man outside a nightclub. He pleaded no contest to misdemeanor aggravated disorderly conduct. He received probation and a $1,000 fine.
The National Football League (NFL) is expected to announce a possible sanction on Edwards. Driving under the influence is reviewed under the NFL’s substance-abuse policy and does not carry automatic suspension under any circumstances.
This is Edward’s first violation of the substance-abuse policy. His previous incident in the nightclub fell under the NFL’s personal conduct policy and the two can’t be used together against a player.
Edwards caught a touchdown pass and two-point conversion on Sunday in the Jets’ victory over the New England Patriots. Many, including his coach Rex Ryan, considered him the best player on the field.
“I love the way he played - he was really into it - but you’re killing us. You can’t put the team in that kind of jeopardy. I appreciate how passionate he is, but you don’t want to be selfish. That’s basically what that is,” Ryan said.
