New Zealand victory over Serbia greatest ever, says coach
May 30th, 2010 - 5:45 pm ICT by ANIWellington, May 30(ANI): New Zealand football coach Ricki Herbert has said that his team’s 1-0 victory over Serbia could be considered their greatest ever win.
The 78th-ranked New Zealanders shocked Serbia, the world’s 15th-ranked team, in a World Cup warm-up friendly in Klagenfurt, Austria.
“For us it’s a fantastic result, it’s the best we’ve ever had in the history of the game, to beat a team at that level,” The New Zealand Herald quoted Herbert, as saying.
Herbert further said that the victory trumped New Zealand’s unforgettable World Cup qualifying win over Bahrain in Wellington last November.”It’s going to take a bit to take away the euphoria of November 14, but I think playing a team ranked that high in the world and to beat them here is a terrific result,” he said.
The win would provide a huge moral boost ahead of New Zealand’s first appearance at a World Cup in 28 years.
New Zealand is in Group F of the World Cup with Italy, Paraguay and Slovakia, while Serbia is drawn in Group D against Germany, Ghana and Australia. (ANI)
