New Zealand hopes to postpone Bangladesh tour due to quake, stifling temperatures
March 19th, 2011 - 3:36 pm ICT by ANIWellington, Mar 19 (ANI): New Zealand Cricket has requested a postponement of the team’s test tour to Bangladesh, citing the potential stifling temperatures on the subcontinent and the Christchurch earthquake as the two main reasons.
The Black Caps’ first tour after the World Cup was to be to Bangladesh in late May and early June.
They were originally supposed to play two test matches there last October, before the schedule was changed to a programme of five one-dayers.
The move came about to help both sides prepare for the World Cup but it was agreed the Black Caps would return during the New Zealand winter for two test matches.
NZC has moved offices to the Lincoln University campus after the earthquake left the organisation’s original headquarters inaccessible.
NZC boss Justin Vaughan said many of the logistical problems surrounding the potential tour to Bangladesh had not been sorted.
“We are still working through what our winter schedule is. We have requested a postponement of our tour to Bangladesh. We’ve got two tests owing to Bangladesh and there was some talk that we were going to play those in late May or June.
“But weather-wise that really isn’t a good time and with the earthquake a lot of our organisational and logistical arrangements have been set back a bit. We have asked for a deferral on that tour until next year,” Vaughan said.
The temperature during the Bangladesh summer can reach 40 degrees Celsius and combined with the high humidity can make playing cricket a tough task. (ANI)
