New York Yankees’ Principal Owner George Steinbrenner Passes Away

July 14, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The principal owner and managing partner of Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees and the former Cleveland shipping magnate George Steinbrenner passed away yesterday morning at his home in Tampa. The prolific owner suffered a major heart attack the night before and was taken to a hospital in Florida but the doctors gave away their hope. George Steinbrenner was suffering from ill health for quite sometime now and he became less involved in his business and handed over the control to his sons Hal and Hank in 2007.
The death of New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner brought in a shadow of sadness over the usually joyous atmosphere at baseball’s 81st All-Star Game yesterday. The sports fraternity expressed their condolence through their interviews to magazines and also through social networking sites. The flags above Angel Stadium’s center field were lowered to half staff and New York Yankees’ players and coaches wore black armbands on their left sleeves. The Major League Baseball’s mid season showcase in Anaheim, California maintained a moment of silence to honor George Steinbrenner and his memories.
Joe Girardi, the manager of New York Yankees expressed his condolence by saying that it was a difficult time on a great day for baseball as a “great man” related to baseball passed away. The manager also added that George Steinbrenner meant “so much” to the game of baseball. The news of George Steinbrenner’s death was not announced till yesterday afternoon and then his family released a statement announcing the hands-on baseball executive’s death. The statement also read along with the news of his death that he was an incredible and charitable man, a visionary and a “giant” in the world of sports.
