New York Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner Dead at 80

George Steinbrenner July 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) George Steinbrenner was a man who dominated the sports scene in New York for 35 years, won 11 American League pennants, and 7 World Championships while he was the New York Yankees’ owner, even after being suspended from baseball twice, and went through a multitude of firings and fueds. He passed away in Tampa Florida this morning (Tuesday) after having a massive heart attack at the age of 80.

Mike Lupica, of the ‘Daily News’ often called him ‘The Boss’ had been failing in his health for the past few years, and had suffered a series of strokes prior to the fatal heart attack. He passed away at 6:30 am.

The family of George Steinbrenner released the following statement, “It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing,” the statement said. “He was an incredible and charitable man. First and foremost he was devoted to his entire family - his beloved wife, Joan; his sisters, Susan Norpell and Judy Kamm, his children, Hank, Jennifer, Jessica and Hal; and all his grandchildren. He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again.”
