New York Yankees Announcer Bob Sheppard Dies At 99

sheNew York, July 12, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Bob Sheppard who is best known as one of the most renowned voices in American baseball, died in his Baldwin, New York home on Sunday. The public address announcer, who was associated with the New York Yankees for about 50 years, was 99 years old when he breathed his last with his wife, Mary by his side. The news of the celebrated announcer’s demise left members of his former team rather shocked and it has been validated by his son, Paul Sheppard.

Condolences started pouring in from various quarters after the news of Bob Sheppard’s death spread with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner releasing a statement in which he remembered the famed announcer as one of the pivotal members of the Yankees family while also adding that his demise leaves behind a lasting silence. Bob Sheppard, who worked for the New York Yankees from 1951 to 2006, is best known for the eloquent manner in which he used to welcome the fans of the team in the Yankee Stadium. His impressive, majestic pronunciations were imitated by many and it managed to earn him the nickname of “the voice of God.”

While talking about the illustrious public address announcer, Derek Jeter, the captain of the New York Yankees that Bob Sheppard was one of the constant factors of the Yankee Stadium which made him one of the most integral part of the experience. Meanwhile, the highly acclaimed announcer also worked for the New York Giants football team during its games in the Yankee Stadium as well as the Giants Stadium from way back 1956 to 2005.
