New York City Marathon 2009- A Grand Success

marathonNov. 2, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The New York City Marathon that was held on Sunday, became a huge success as people from all quarters of life enthusiastically participated in it. The marathon is one of the major events that takes place very year and involves routes spanning all across the New York City. Every year, huge number of people participate in the grand event which also boasts of having innumerable spectators, who contribute immensely to turn the event into a success. Moreover, the event is also looked forward to because of the electrifying atmosphere and distinct course of journey.

This year, the marathon was all the more special, as it marked the 40th anniversary of the event and around 40,000 people participated in it. Even the weather in New York city on Sunday morning [with its blue sky and pleasant temperature] was perfect for the participants to complete the 26.2 miles journey. The event turned out to be extremely exciting for the Americans as Meb Keflezighi became the first American to win the marathon in almost two decades. Keflezighi finished his race within two hours, nine minutes and fifteen seconds- defeating his Kenyan opponent. On the women’s front, Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia became the winner by defeating Russian Ludmila Petrova by mere eight seconds.

The first New York Marathon was held in the year 1970, in which only 127 participants took part. However, over the years the marathon has grown to became an event that is popular worldwide and in which people from different countries participate. Every year about 90,000 people show their interest to participate in the event, out of which only around 40,000 participants are selected. The marathon is held every year on the first Sunday of November.
