New Oz captain Clarke keen to rely on Ponting’s experience

Dhaka, Apr 9(ANI): New Australian captain Michael Clarke has said that he will lean heavily on Ricky Ponting’s experience as he begins his full-time reign in the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh in Dhaka today.

Clarke, who has previously led Australia as a stand-in captain, replaced Ponting as skipper following the team’s World Cup quarterfinal exit last month.

“Ricky’s advice has always been very helpful to me whether that was when I was his vice-captain or now as the captain,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Clarke, as saying.

“I have certainly said openly to Ricky that everybody in the team will continue to need his knowledge of the game and me definitely. His knowledge is crucial to the team going forward,” he added.

Ponting has retained his place as batsman in the squad, and his demotion seems to have done no harm to his batting.

The former skipper followed his century in Australia’s World Cup quarterfinal against India with 69 from 74 balls in Thursday’s warm-up victory over a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI.

The remaining two ODIs will be played in Dhaka on April 11 and 13. (ANI)
