New captain for Pakistan after Australia tour
January 23rd, 2010 - 10:44 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Sydney, Jan 23 (IANS) Mohammad Yousuf’s captaincy in Australia has displeased the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), with chairman Ijaz Butt Saturday saying they will decide on the new captain after the tour.
Pakistan was whitewashed by Australia 3-0 in the Test series and critics hold Yousuf’s bizarre captaincy accountable for it.
Younis Khan, who has returned to the side after missing the Test series against New Zealand and Australia due to a self-imposed exile, is playing in the one-day series against Australia and appears set to regain his role as national skipper.
“This captain (Mohammad Yousuf) was for this series only and we will decide after the tour of Australia about the captain we will change,” Butt told Pakistan television.
“We did not change Younis. Unfortunately the sports committee of the parliament made him run away after they levelled match-fixing allegations against him.”
Younis quit after the standing committee on sports alleged the Pakistan team had thrown a match against Australia in the Champions Trophy in South Africa in September.
“Younis was a good captain but he was hurt on the allegations and quit,” Butt said. “Now we will soon decide about the change.”
However, Yousuf has coach Intikhab Alam’s backing. “He’s doing his best,” Intikhab was quoted as saying in Sydney Morning Herald. “When the team loses, people start criticising. We take no notice of that.”
Pakistan will play Test series in England later this year against Australia and England.
