Chandigarh, Jan 31 (IANS) European champions the Netherlands were left embarrassed here Saturday when they had to send their star players Taeke Takeme and Teum de Noiijer back home after they were found violating the norms regarding the number of players in the Punjab Gold Cup Hockey Tournament.”Each teams can bring 18 players for the tournament but the Netherlands came here with a 20-player squad. So we had directed them to send back two players,” said Ramesh Appo, director of Punjab Gold Cup.

Dutch coach Michel Heuvel said: “We had gone to Australia with 21 players to play the Test series there. We called the Punjab Gold Cup officials from Australia and took permission of bringing a squad of 20 players here. After getting a green signal from them we came here with 20 players.

“However the officials here have now told us to send back any two of our players. We obey the rules and regulations of the tournaments, therefore we have already sent two of our main players, Taeke Takeme and Teum de Noiijer (former captain), back to Germany. They will board their flight Saturday night from New Delhi.”
