Washington, Jan 18, (THAINDIAN NEWS) NBA star Gilbert Arenas pleaded guilty for a felony charge. He had been charged with the possession of a pistol. It was found that the player did not have a license for the pistol that he was carrying. Generally, the offense means that the convict will be sentenced to five years in prison, but since Gilbert Arenas had pleaded guilty, the sentence might well be reduced to a mere six months. For the time being, NBA has suspended the Washington Wizards guard. For the duration of the suspension, he would not be receiving any payment from the team, and the suspension has been declared as indefinite.
Gilbert Arenas has pleaded guilty on the ground that he had not taken the pistol with any criminal intentions. He claimed that he had done that as a joke, a prank he wanted to play on his teammates. Unfortunately, the joke went totally wrong. The incident occurred on Dec 21, 2009. Gilbert Arenas was found in the locker room for his team, engaged in a confrontation with another member of the team, Javaris Crittenton. After the case was filed, he confessed that he possesses a number of guns that he used to keep in his locker, but that he did not know that it was illegal to do so.
Gilbert Arenas also commented that he had taken out the gun in order to play a prank on his fellow teammates, until it went wrong. Following the incident, his deal with Adidas got canceled. Meanwhile, his return to the NBA hangs in mid-air, as the decision of the same depends on the commissioner, David Stern.
