Mystery man admits to spiking disgraced Johnson’s drink with anabolic steroid
December 26th, 2009 - 12:50 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )Melbourne, Dec. 26 (ANI): Disgraced 1988 Seoul Games 100 meter winner Ben Johnson has reportedly obtained an explosive confession from a mystery man who had access to the Olympic doping control room at the 1988 Seoul Games. The man has admitted to spiking Johnson’s drink with an anabolic steroid.
The confession by Andre Jackson, who the Seoul 100m runner-up Carl Lewis has described as “a family friend”, is contained in Johnson’s autobiography due to be published in February. There is no suggestion Lewis knew of the plan, reports the Daily Telegraph.
Johnson said he is poised to blow the lid off the original Great Olympic Swindle.
The shockwaves still reverberate around the greatest sprint showdown in Olympic history at the Seoul Games 21 years ago.
That was when Canadian upstart Johnson did as he promised and defeated America’s defending 100m champion Carl Lewis in a world-record time of 9.79sec.
But a few days later, Johnson was disqualified after his urine sample tested positive for stanozolol and Lewis was promoted to become the only man to successfully defend the Olympic 100m title.
According to Johnson’s coach, Charlie Francis, Ben earned six million dollars in the 12 months leading up to the Seoul Olympics, and if not for the drug bust “would have earned 100 million dollars over the remainder of his career”.
For those inside the Johnson camp, the greater mystery was how did stanozolol get into his urine sample. They admit he was using an obscure East German designer steroid called furazobol. They said Johnson had not used stanozolol for years because it made his muscles tight which carried too great an injury risk.
In his self-published autobiography, titled Seoul to Soul, Johnson says he will present proof he was the victim of sabotage, that his drink was spiked with stanozolol while he was waiting to provide a urine sample in the drug-testing area in Seoul after the 100m final.(ANI)
