Myneni pockets title

Chennai, July 28 (IANS) India’s Saketh Myneni, second seed, got past fourth seed Suk-Yun Jeong of Korea 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 to lift the singles title in the Indian Oil Servo ITF Futures men’s tennis tournament here Saturday after a two-hour 15-minute battle.

It was Myneni’s second title at the SDAT Stadium here, following his triumph in the ITF Futures event last November.

Myneni pocketed $1,300 and 18 ATP points, while Jeong received USD 900 and 10 ATP points. N Sreekumar, Executive Director, Corporate Communication, Indian Oil Corporation gave away the prizes.

Myneni, from Hyderabad, broke Jeong in the fourth game of the first set and maintained his lead to win 6-3. Serving five aces and playing with aggression, Myneni Jeong on the run throughout the set.

The second set saw a sudden drop in Myneni’s intensity and Jeong seeing opportunity, grew in confidence. Inexplicably, Myneni was broken twice and trailed 0-5 before he held serve and broke Jeong to reduce the lead to 2-5.

Jeong then played a resolute game thumping forehand ground strokes and passing shots at will to close out the set.

In the decider, Myneni broke Jeong in the very first game. The Indian’s percentage of effective first serves improved and he kept up his domination by breaking Jeong again to lead.5-2.

At this stage, Myneni faltered again. Jeong broke back and held serve with punishing ground strokes. At 5-4, Myneni composed himself and held serve to win the game, set and the title.Myneni said: “I am thrilled to win in Chennai once again. I am working on improving my fitness to enable me to do well in higher level of tournaments in the future.

“I am extremely grateful to my parents, my coach CV Nagaraj and rest of the coaching team in making it possible for me to get so far.”

Jeong, winner of the Coimbatore LMW Futurese event last week, accepted his defeat with grace and said: “I did well last week to win and this week to reach final. I train in the US and working towards improving myself to participate in Grand Slam Qualifying events in a year’s time.”
