My main goal is to stay fit: Jeev Milkha Singh
January 3rd, 2012 - 6:18 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Jan 3 (IANS) Top Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh says his main goal this year is to stay fit and look to replicate his exploits of 2008.
Singh, the first Indian professional golfer to become a member of the European tour, said he felt fresh and was looking forward to playing this year.
“Last year was very low for me, this is a brand new year and I’m fresh. My main goal is to stay fit and I am looking forward to this year. I want to repeat my form of 2008 again,” Jeev said on the sidelines of the launch here of the second edition of the Gujarat Kensville Challenge, beginning Jan 26 in Ahmedabad.
“My main focus is the European Tour, I will test my body as I will be playing four tournaments in a row. I have been working very hard over the past two months. If you are physically fit, mentally you are stronger.”
Jeev has had a tumultuous three years failing to win a tournament after his victory in the Barclays Singapore Open in 2008. Back injuries have plagued the 40-year-old.
“Injuries are part of a sportsman’s life. Golf does take a toll on your body, I have to live with them and work around them. I have cut my events down, now I’ll be playing 34-35 events a year.”
“Right now I feel my game is really good. Over the past 20 days I have hit a lot of golf balls and I have been striking them well.”
The Padma Shri winner said he would only be focusing on the European tour this year. Singh seems to be getting back on track after two-tied fourth place finishes on the Asian Tour this season and a top-10 finish in last month’s Thailand Golf Championship.
“I just want to focus on the European tour if I move back to the top-50, then I will play in the US.”
“I have been very fortunate to earn a living with what I love so much. I love to play golf and I wouldn’t know what else to do.”
