Muzumdar goes past Kaypee to become leading Ranji scorer
November 6th, 2009 - 9:23 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Guwahati, Nov 6 (IANS) Assam captain and Mumbai discard Amol Muzumdar became the highest scorer in Ranji Trophy, surpassing Punjab’s Amarjeet Kaypee, when he scored nine runs in the second innings against Rajasthan in a Group A Plate match here Friday.
Muzumdar, who was 31 runs short of achieving the landmark, scored 22 runs in the first innings and 25 in the second and he now has 7,640 runs, 17 more than Kaypee’s 7623.
Assam, however, lost the match by 95 runs.
Muzumdar made his debut for Mumbai in 1993-94, and played crucial roles in Mumbai winning Ranji Trophy eight times since he started playing for the state.
The 34-year-old was unlucky not to play for India despite scoring heavily in every season for Mumbai. In all, he has scored 9,605 first-class games runs, including 24 centuries from 145 matches.
After playing for Mumbai for 16 years, he was dropped from the Mumbai squad for the pre-season Buchi Babu Tournament, following an unimpressive 2008-2009 season during which he scored 359 runs at an average of 27.61.
