London, Apr 9(ANI): Ace tennis player Andy Murray’s former coach Leon Smith is emerging as a frontrunner to be Britain’s next Davis Cup captain.
Smith coached Murray between the ages of 11 and 16.
The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) is expected to make an announcement next week on who will succeed John Lloyd, who resigned from the post following their recent humiliating defeat to Lithuania.
The governing body refused to confirm if Smith had been offered the job, The Telegraph reports.
The LTA has consulted widely and among the names considered were Tim Henman, Miles Maclagan and Rusedski.
Henman would have been the LTA’s first choice as a replacement, but he made it clear that he would turn down any offer to become captain, as he does not feel ready for the responsibility and the commitment that comes with the job.
Britain needs to win the Turkey relegation playoff in order to avoid dropping into the Europe/Africa zone Group III. (ANI)
