Rayong (Thailand), Jan 17 (IANS) Young golfers C. Muniyappa and Anirban Lahiri continued to be the best Indian hopes at the end of the fourth and penultimate round of the five-round Asian Tour Final Qualifying Stage.Muniyappa with rounds of 73, 75, 72 and 73 was one-over 293 and tied 32nd here Friday. Lahiri shot a fourth round of 74 and was two-over 294 as was Amandeep Johl (72) to be tied 38th. Himmat Rai (71) and three-over 295 at 44th also had a chance as top 40 and ties from the remaining 89 players will earn the full card.
Firoz Ali (77) and Rahil Gangjee (78) at eight-over 300 were tied 80th and needed a brilliant fifth and final round to make the grade.
Japan’s Daisuke Maruyama blasted a three-under-par 70 for the joint lead in the fourth round of the Final Stage.
Maruyama, 37, nailed an eagle, two birdies against a lone dropped shot under windy conditions at the St Andrews 2000 course for a total of 285 alongside England’s Ally Mellor and Colombia’s Eduardo Herrera who shot a 72 and 74 respectively.
South African James Kruger shot a 71 and was in a tie for fourth spot alongside Finland’s Toni Karjalainen who recorded a 72 two strokes off the pace.
