Munaf, Powar selected for Kanpur Test, R.P. Singh axed

Ahmedabad, April 6 (IANS) Fast bowler Munaf Patel and off-spinner Ramesh Powar were Sunday picked while medium pacer Rudra Pratap Singh was dropped for the third and final Test against South Africa starting in Kanpur Friday. Indian cricket board secretary Niranjan Shah, while announcing the 16-member squad, said that captain Anil Kumble and lanky fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who are not fit, would play only after passing a fitness test Thursday.

Two selectors will go to Kanpur to take a final call. The squad will eventually be pruned down to 14.

On Powar’s inclusion, Shah said: “The team management wanted three spinners but if Anil Kumble is fit he will play.”

He also said that Munaf, who has been declared match-fit, has been asked to join the team here Monday.

All five selectors, coach Gary Kirsten and Kumble were present at the selection meeting.

The squad: Anil Kumble (captain), Mahendra Singh Dhoni (vice-captain/wicketkeeper), Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, V.V.S. Laxman, Wasim Jaffer, Mohammed Kaif, Yuvraj Singh, Irfan Pathan, Munaf Patel, Sreesanth, Ishant Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Piyush Chawla and Ramesh Powar.
