Mumbai beat Uttar Pradesh to lift Ranji Trophy

Hyderabad, Jan 16 (IANS) Mumbai clinched their 38th Ranji Trophy title, defeating Uttar Pradesh by 243 runs here Friday.Having set a victory target of 525 runs, Mumbai bowled out Uttar Pradesh for 282 on the final day with a session to spare.

Dhawal Kulkarni finished with five for 76 while Romesh Pawar took three for 75.

This was the 42nd time Mumbai has made it to the Ranji Trophy final, and they have lost only four times.

Uttar Pradesh were left ruing the missed opportunities in the first innings when they let Mumbai off the hook from a shaky 55 for four. Rohit Sharma cashed in on his luck to score 141 and resurrect Mumbai’s innings.

Mumbai scored 402 in their first innings and dismissed UP for 245.

Sharma cracked another ton in the second innings as Mumbai made 367 and left UP with a day to survive.

Uttar Pradesh lost wickets regularly and were reduced to four for 58 in the morning. Skipper Mohammad Kaif (72) and Bhuvenshwar Singh (80) provided the only resistance with a 112 run fifth-wicket stand.
