Mourinho insists Madrid not La Liga Champions yet

Madrid, Feb 13 (IANS) Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho Monday refused to accept that his side were the Spanish La Liga champions elect following their 4-2 home win over Levante.

The win Sunday leaves Madrid 10 points clear of Barcelona and given they have dropped just eight points all season, it is hard to see them being overtaken by a Barcelona side that is now putting all its energies into winning the Champions League.

Speaking early Monday morning, Mourinho didn’t see it that way.

“There are still a lot of points and a lot of difficult games to be played, because everything is at stake for everyone. If my maths doesn’t fail me, we still need 39 points to assure the title,” said Mourinho, who accepted he was happy with his side’ s position.

“10 points are 10 points and that does give you a margin for error, because if you lose a game it doesn’t put you on the limit,” he was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Mourinho added that although his side have been virtually unstoppable this season, he expects them to slip up before the end of the campaign.

“We will make errors, just as we did in the first half of the season. We have some difficult away games and some tough ones at home. For example, Levante was very strong, they were well-organised. You only win the title when it is mathematically secure and the numbers tell me that we need almost 40 points.”

“This league is not going to be won on goal average, it is going to be won because of the number of points we have,” said the coach.
