Morita, Dabija to clash in ITF Women’s Challenger tennis final
November 21st, 2008 - 10:49 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Nov 21 (IANS) Second seed Ayumi Morita of Japan and unheralded Romanian Elora Dabija carved out an emphatic straight set wins Friday to set up a title clash at the Gujarat NRE Coke $50,000 ITF Women’s Challenger tennis tournament here.Morita displayed her customary clinical precision in the semi final to halt the dream run of qualifier Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia 6-1, 6-3 in exactly an hour.
The 26-minute first set saw Jovanovski manage to retain save only in the third game.
The second set ran in the same pattern, as Jovanovski dropped serve in the second
and fourth games, but she broke Morita in the seventh to reduce the gap. However, Morita took the set at 6-3 to cruise into the final.
Dabija reached the summit round accounting for Australian Sophie Ferguson, also unseeded, 6-2, 7-6(7-4) in 102 minutes.
Dabija broke Ferguson in the first, third and seventh games of the opening set, but got demolished in the sixth game. Ferguson had her chances in the fourth game when she had Dabija at 15-40 but let her off the hook as the Romanian retained serve. Ferguson served one ace and three double faults on way to taking the set.
In the second set, Ferguson was broken in the third, ninth and eleventh games while
Dabija got broken in the fourth, sixth and twelfth games. The set rolled into the tie-break, which Dabija won 7-4 in 66 minutes.
The doubles title was lifted by Laura Siegemund of Germany and Romanian Agnes Szatmari. The third seeds went on to defeat the top seeded Chinese pair of Jing-Jing Lu and Sheng-Nan Sun 7-5, 6-3 in 98 minutes.
