Monica, Pooja in China Open boxing semifinals
May 31st, 2011 - 10:35 pm ICT by IANSGuiyang City (China), May 31 (IANS) India Tuesday had mixed luck at the China Open boxing tournament with Monica Saun (60kg) and Pooja Rani (75 kgs) entering the semifinals and compatriot Sonia Lather (51 kgs) faltering in the quarterfinals.
Monica, backed by Indian and Pakistani team members, registered an emphatic 29:7 win against Hlaing Kyu Kyu of Myanmar. She will now meet Asian Games gold medallist Dong Cheng of China in the semifinals June 2.
Pooja (75 kgs), got a bye into the semifinals. She now meets Ning Yuyu of China Guizhou, which is the second local team in this tournament.
Sonia lost to Kebekova Jaina of Kazakhstan 11:16. Sonia fought hard in the third and fourth round but could not get past her Kazakh opponent, who displayed better footwork.
A total of 140 boxers from 20 countries are participating in the tournament.
