Mohun Bagan go past Pailan in I-League

Kolkata, Jan 27 (IANS) Formidable Mohun Bagan returned to their winning ways after two consecutive defeats with a 2-0 victory over a youthful Pailan Arrows in I-League football here Friday.

After a barren first session, Mohun Bagan captain Jose Ramirez Barreto opened the account in the 64th minute before Seikh Jewel Raja got an insurance goal 12 minutes later.

Having lost their previous two exchanges against Sporting Clube de Goa and Prayag United, the green and maroons played with more purpose at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan to garner full points and take the fourth spot with 30 points from 17 outings.

The home side had more ball possession in the opening half, but lacked the final touch to translate a good move into a goal.

However, they upped the ante post breather and opened the lean when Brazilian Hudson Lima’s corner from right flank was headed into the net by the redoubtable Barreto.

The city team kept the momentum and Raja made it 2-0 in the 76th minute. Syed Rahim Nabi saw Naveen Kumar approaching him and pushed the ball towards the far post for Raja to do the needful.

Pailan Arrows put up a spirited fight and created several chances but their inexperience proved a major handicap. They now languish in the 13th slot on seven points from 15 matches.

Mohun Bagan had won the first round encounter between the two sides 3-1.
