Mohammedan Sporting held by Dhaka counterpart in IFA ShieldFebruary 29th, 2008 - 1:23 am ICT by admin
Kolkata, Feb 28 (IANS) Dhaka’s Mohammedan Sporting and Mohammedan Sporting of Kolkata played out an insipid goalless draw in the second match of the IFA Shield here Thursday. Both teams are taking this tournament as preparatory ground for future tournaments - Mohammedan Sporting for the second division I-League starting from March 26 and the Bangladeshi squad for that country’s premier division league starting from April 15.
The Dhaka outfit had just a week’s training before arriving here to play the tournament. They had a six-month lay-off after finishing second in the premier division league last season and that showed in their rustiness.
In comparison, the Kolkata team won the Prodyut Dutta memorial tournament, and gained passport to the IFA Shield.
The Kolkata team was sluggish and that cost them a chance at a win. Still, a number of chances fell their way in both sessions. Mike Okoro was set up with a delightful down-the-middle pass by Prasanta but the Nigerian, now a Polish citizen, fumbled with his first touch and goalkeeper Aminul Haque rushed out of his charge to pick the ball from Okoro’s boot.
K. Kulothungan then played a nice one-two with Okoro before moving up to collect a ball from Jyoti Kumar. Despite reaching the ball ahead of the goalkeeper, the former Kulothungan couldn’t get past the rival goalie. Okoro got another chance deep into the second half, but blasted wide from close after a nice through from Jyoti.
In between, the Dhaka club got a couple of chances, first with a Wali Faisal chip off a Paul MacJames header came off the crosspiece and then a blip from goalkeeper Nasim Akhtar presented a golden chance to Adil Karrouchi whose left-footer ricocheted off the woodwork.
