Modi blasts BCCI for opposing UDRS
June 18th, 2011 - 8:50 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 18 (IANS) Lalit Modi, former chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Saturday blasted the Indian cricket board for opposing the use of the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) and asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) to take a firm stand.
The Indian board’s continued objection to UDRS has come in for criticism, more so after their refusal to use it in the coming series in England. England favour the system, but it can’t be used unless both boards agree.
“It is disappointing to see the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) turn its back on the wider use of technology during India’s tour of England. DRS was in use and apparently worked effectively in last winter’s Ashes series and the recent World Cup,” Modi wrote on his website.
“It is also currently being used in the three-Test series between England and Sri Lanka. But it won’t be used in England because the BCCI continues to oppose the technology ICC clearly believes is reliable, accurate and significantly improves decision-making.”
Modi said ICC should ensure that it is not dictated by the BCCI.
“It is high time the ICC took a stand to invoke consistency across world cricket. It is nonsense to allow an individual body to dictate an inconsistent policy to the rest of the world,” he said.
“DRS was considered reliable enough for the World Cup and the technology should now be fully embraced. Otherwise, the public will lose faith in a product. Cricket must use it or risk its credibility. The ICC cannot let the BCCI dictate any longer.”
