Mistrust a feature of cricket betting industry, especially when it involves Indo-Pak matches: Speed
April 22nd, 2011 - 12:42 pm ICT by ANISydney, Apr. 22 (ANI): Former International Cricket Council (ICC) CEO Malcolm Speed has said in his book that mistrust is a key feature of the cricket betting industry, particularly when it comes to matches that are played between India and Pakistan.
“The stakes are incredibly high - hundreds of millions of dollars are being bet on each match, particularly those in which India plays Pakistan. It is cash-based and there are no records,” he writes in his book “Sticky Wicket: A Decade of Change in World Cricket”.
The Age further quotes him, as saying: “Failure to pay is not a good career move. We were dealing with ugly, ruthless, illegal, unruly, dangerous and debilitating opponents who were beyond our control, and we knew that players and officials were fair game if they could be influenced or seduced.”
The ICC’s anti-corruption officers have been lecturing national teams for the past decade, starting at youth world cups, and it is to be hoped players are more receptive now than in the early days when one cricketer turned his chair around and read a newspaper during the session. (ANI)
