New Delhi, Dec 21 (IANS) Bengal moved into the final of the Ranji Trophy Plate group by the virtue of their first innings lead against Goa in the drawn semi-final here Sunday. Bengal also qualified for the Super League group after being relegated last season.For former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who played his last first-class match, it was mission accomplished. He hit a match-saving 69 for Bengal in the first innings that helped the 2006 Ranji finalists to come back to the elite group.
“I am happy as I could contribute in my last match. I have always enjoyed playing domestic cricket. This result was a fitting farewell for me,” he said.
Put in to bat first, Bengal were all out for 337 in the first innings and ended the final day at 193 for five at the Karnail Singh Stadium. Goa were all out for 230 runs in the first innings Sunday to hand Bengal a crucial 137-run lead.
Resuming at overnight score of 116 for seven, Ryan Ninan fought lonely war with his unbeaten 88 as medium pacer Sourav Sarkar (3-20) wrapped up the Goan tail.
In reply, Manoj Tiwari came back to form with a classy 80 and Dibendu Chakraborty scored 49 and Bengal ended the day at 193 for five.
