Washington, Nov. 29, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Apple Cup 2009 kicked off yesterday, on Nov. 28, Saturday. The event is an annual tournament between two of the biggest universities of the country: the Washington State University and the University of Washington. It is the final game of the season that is traditionally played the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The event takes place in a rather odd manner, the odd years it occurs at the Husky Stadium in Seattle and in the even years it takes place in the WSU’s Pullman, Martin Stadium.
Last night at the Apple Cup, was the 102nd time the Huskies of the University of Washington and the Cougars of the Washington State University faced each other. The Cougars lost at an overwhelming 30-0 to the Huskies, sealing a first time win for the Huskies in 45 years. It ended the two game winning streak of the University of Washington.
The only redeeming point of the entirely forgettable match was the brilliant performance of the Cougars linebacker Mike Ledgerwood. His performance in the match made everyone sit up and take notice. He made 14 tackles, 10 of which he made solo, and was the only one in the Washington State University lineup worth noticing. He commented later that he had been “in the zone the whole time”.
Mike had been one of the first of the coach Paul Ruff’s recruiting class. He was definitely not on the roster of players, considering he is only a sophomore. He was meant as a spare, and went into the game mainly as Louis Bland had suffered a knee injury. However, he snatched attention once on field.
