Mike Conway crashIndianapolis, May 31, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The 2010 Indy 500 race on Sunday saw one of the most horrifying accidents in sports recently. The 26-year old No.24 car driver, Mike Conway, got involved in what was a crash straight out of a Hollywood movie. Mike Conway was battling Ryan Hunter-Reay when his car flew in the air, hit the catch fence and then tumbled back into the track. The car was completely disintegrated into flying debris to the shock of the audience. The horrifying crash almost took out defending champion Helio Castroneves.

By the 199th lap, most drivers had slowed down to preserve fuel. Mike Conway who hit the pit in the earlier laps was going almost 20mph more than other racers at the point of the crash. Ryan Hunter-Keay who was almost out of fuel tried to cut out Mike Conway. While trying to overtake Ryan Hunter-Keay, Mike Conway’s car went flying into the air after colliding with the front tyre of the adjacent car. The car started to spin in the air and flew into the catch fence. For the drivers who went past, it was a horrifying sight and feeling of a car flying around. Danica Patrick said it is never comforting to see a car doing cartwheel in the air and wished Mike Conway a speedy recovery.

Mike Conway had to be immediately airlifted to the hospital to avoid the post race-traffic. He complained of a leg injury. The other racer involved, Ryan Hunter-Keay also injured his thumb and will undergo a surgery soon. Team owner Dennis Reinbold said in a statement that he was about to warn Mike Conway that he was going too fast and that there was enough time and room to go past the slowing down racers.
