mwlvinFeb 7, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The UFC 109 saw Melvin Guillard win with all three judges imparting a 29-28, thus making him win by an unanimous decision. The fight was against Ronys Torres, who is a newcomer. Ronys Torres is said to have showed “excellent grappling”, but in the end it was the defense tactics used by the patient Melvin Guillard that got him the win. However, the credit also goes to some of the highlight-reel shots which were hit by the winner.

The newcomer came to the game with a plan, and that was very apparent. He meant to keep Melvin Guillard stuck on the ground. The first round saw him starting off with a take down and trying to keep his opponent down for some time. However, once Melvin Guillard did rise to his feet, he landed some great shots on his opponent. The end saw a deja vu happening. Only this time, the shots were landed by Melvin Guillard before he could be taken down to the ground again. Ronys Torres’ takedown effort was wasted as his opponent mounted him and followed to squish him under a round of hard-hit shots. The best moment of the game is being said to be where the winner uses a sprawl, which has improved too, so that he could keep Ronys Torres ‘on his feet’.

The critics and professionals say that the new coaching has brought a change in Melvin Guillard who has been working with Greg Jackson’s Submission Fighting. This style of coaching is much more ’strategic’ in nature. The Submission fighting seems to have helped the fighter not only on the field but also in his personal life. To start coaching with the mixed martial arts coach was a very good decision on Melvin Guillard’s part.
