oudin1This has been one miraculous journey that Melanie Oudin has had so far at the 2009 US Open and all along her journey, she had the support of her 15 year old boyfriend, Austin Smith to see her through.

Oudin credits her boyfriend to be the inspiration behind her winning at the game against former world no. 1, Maria Sharapova.

The 17 year old rising US teen tennis sensation has said that it was Austin’s belief in her that propelled her. It is supposed to have been his idea to have the word “Believe” tagged on to Oudin’s custom made pink and yellow Adidas sports shoes, which Oudin feels may have been her lucky charm.

The shoes were originally required to have featured her name. However, on Smith’s suggestion, Oudin is said to have gone ahead with the minor changes. Smith made her believe she had nothing to loose and she let go of all her fears to embrace a terrific win.

Post winning against the 29 seeded Sharapova, Oudin (who is placed at 70th rank) is reported to have said, “I played with no fear today. For me, it’s all about that. It’s believing that I can beat these girls and hang there with them. If I didn’t have that, then there’s no way I’d. win today. That’s how I won. I believe that I can do it.”

Ever since that historic upsetting of Sharapova some days ago, Oudin and her boyfriend have been hugely featured in the news, as the teen sensation makes a place for herself amidst the ranks of tennis greats while playing out the tournament.
