McCullum sees silver lining in Champions Trophy injury curse on Kiwis

Auckland, Oct. 7 (ANI): New Zealand wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum believes that the injury curse, which fell upon the Black Caps during the Champions Trophy, has given way to some fresh talent.
New Zealand lost crucial players like all-rounder Jacob Oram, batsman Jesse Ryder, pacer Daryl Tuffey and skipper Daniel Vettori to injuries during different stages of the tournament.
“We’ve had some pretty tough times over the last couple of years, not just losing players through injury but also retirements and (forced absences through the rebel) Indian Cricket League when it was running,” stuff.co.nz quoted McCullum, as saying.
“So things have been a bit tough from that point of view, but I think what it has done is given other guys opportunities.
“Now if you look at the New Zealand team as a squad of 20 or 25 players, you’ve got guys who are capable of performing on the international stage and also a number of matchwinners,” he added.
Vettori had to pullout from the crucial final due to hamstring soreness. McCullum, who led the side with Vettori out, said New Zealand missed the captain, but they are happy with what they managed.
“Whilst we are disappointed with what happened (in the final) we are certainly proud of what we have achieved.
“We’re proud of the desire and the passion that the team has shown through some tough times and if we can continue to capture that in series and tournaments we play in, this team can certainly move forward,” he added. (ANI)
