barkley0328_mediumOn Thursday, USC Coach Pete Carroll declared that Matt Barkley will be the starting QB in the USC opener. He was quoted saying, “Its clear to us as a staff that Matt Barkley is ready to be starting QB at USC.” The coach clearly indicated that Barkley was the most appropriate choice since he had surpassed all their expectations and was physically able to take the responsibility.

Carroll indicated that Barkley had “the mentality and temperament to handle the position”: his “personality being well received” by the other players was the obvious choice. He acknowledged the teenager as a true talent. Barkley reportedly threw 18 interceptions last year.

Barkley is said to have got lucky after he took the job of Aaron Corp who is reportedly recovering from a fractured tibia. However sources propounded that it as sheer talent and good performance over the spring that the 18 year old got entitled to be the 1st freshman to ever start a USC opener.
Carroll said, “At this point he is ready to be the guy for us.” Does that signify that Barkley will lose his significance after Aaron Corp returns fit on the team to be next weekend’s opener against San Jose State? USC ’s second game is scheduled for September 12th at Ohio State, which will be an important game since it will influence this season’s BSC National title.

Former Arkansas QB Mitch Mustain, who recently got transferred after one season, does not seem a likely player to be starter at USC, since he has not done that already.
