Mario Gomez Urges Gay Footballers To “Come Out”
November 12th, 2010 - 3:16 am ICT by Angela Kaye MasonNov 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Mario Gomez, a leading German footballer has requested recently for gay players to be more open about their sexuality, and is asking for a radical re-consideration of homosexuality in football.
Gomez, a Bayern Striker, has many against his way of thinking in the football establishment, including some of his own team members as well as the German football federation, who say that his suggestions could destroy the careers of the players who choose to follow his advice.
Gomez disagrees. He has not given a statement about his own sexuality, nor stated whether or not he is gay, but he contends that if players were more honest about their sexuality, then they would improve their game. “They would play as if they had been liberated,” Gomez insisted. “Being gay should no longer be a taboo topic.”
Other contend that a person’s sexual preference does not need to be announced in order for a person to play sports. Whether a person is gay or straight, they insist that what a person chooses to do in the bedroom is not necessary conversation outside of the home. Many claim that for a football player to say he is gay would cause him to be “destroyed” by “merciless fans”.
