Rio de Janeiro, July 12 (IANS) Real Madrid defender Marcelo says the lessons learnt from Brazil’s ill-fated Beijing Olympic football campaign could help break the team’s gold medal hex.
The Olympic Games remain the only major international football tournament Brazil is yet to win, reported Xinhua.
Marcelo joins AC Milan duo Alexandre Pato and Thiago Silva as the sole survivors from the 2008 team which was defeated by eventual champions Argentina in the semi-finals.
“What I can say is that I learnt a lot in Beijing,” Marcelo said during a press conference in Rio de Janeiro Wednesday, where the team has gathered for a pre-Games training camp.
“It’s a short competition and we have to bond quickly as a team. I learnt that it’s imperative to build up camaraderie both on and off the pitch. If we can do that we will have a good chance,” he said.
Brazil have been drawn in the Olympics Group C with Egypt, Belarus and New Zealand.
