AMSTERDAM (BNO NEWS) — Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar received a Dutch royal order before the start of a training match between the Netherlands and Hungary on Saturday, the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) said.

Van der Sar, 39, was named Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau, a Dutch national order of chivalry. VWS Minister Ab Klink noted that he has been a world class goalkeeper for more than 20 years.

“Ajax, Juventus, Fulham and Manchester United have greatly benefited from this,” the Ministry said in a brief statement. “Van der Sar has also supported the Dutch national team for some 15 years.”

The famed goalkeeper received a final farewell from his Dutch fans during the friendly training match between the Netherlands and Hungary. Van der Sar recently signed a new one-year deal to play for Manchester United next season, but also turned down an offer from Dutch head coach Bert van Maarwijk to take the number one spot for the country during the World Cup in South Africa.

Besides being a goalkeeper, Van der Sar is also an Ambassador of the “Make A Wish” foundation, an organization for children with a life-threatening illness.
