London, July 19 (IANS) After finalising his move to Eastlands from Arsenal, Togo international Emanuel Adebayor said that Manchester City was always his first choice.
The 25-year-old passed his medical tests Saturday and joined the City on a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee.
“I am happy being here. I had a good discussion with the coach. I had a good discussion with the chairman of Man City. What they have told me is about the future,” Adebayor was quoted as saying in The Daily Telegraph.
Adebayor was greeted at Eastlands by several hundred fans. He is the latest addition to Mark Hughes’ squad this summer following the signings of Gareth Barry, Carlos Tevez and Roque Santa Cruz.
“We have to fight for the club, we have to fight for the team,” he said. “As you can see, the fans believe in us that we can bring them something. That’s what we’re going to fight for now.”
He claimed that he left Arsenal with the blessings of manager Arsene Wenger after spending three and a half years at the north London club.
“It (leaving Arsenal) was a little bit difficult but at the end of the day it’s a game,” he added.
“They will have made money as well. I had a good discussion with Arsene. I have all his blessing to leave the club so I’m very happy. I went through a lot of good moments in Arsenal and a lot of difficult moments as well. I’m very happy to be a player who played for Arsenal.”
Adebayor also said that his target will be to take Manchester City among the top four in the Premiership.
“We would love to be in the top four. We know it’s not going to be easy at all. I think the players are here for that. Gareth Barry signed to achieve things, same as Carlos Tevez, same as Santa Cruz, same as myself. I can’t wait to play for City’s fans and show them what I can do. I was born to play football and that is what I want to do. I have come here to make history for this club and those supporters,” he said.
